Rodriguez More or Less Promising 'Machete' Sequels

It only stands to reason that a movie that sprung to life as a fake trailer might wind up being a franchise. Of course, we need to see if the first movie makes any money or if it winds up being Scott Pilgrim, but Robert Rodriguez has set up Machete to have a few follow-ups. This is nothing new, though. Rodriguez talked about sequels before Machete ever went into production, and it turns out that he shot the film in such a way that you'll have unanswered questions that warrant extra chapters. Once upon a time, he called them Machete Kills, Machete Kills Again, and Machete in Space. I'd definitely pay to see the last one. "Some people who didn't die in the film actually did die, I just cut out their deaths," Rodriguez tells The Playlist. "I wanted to save them for a sequel, but you actually see that they did perish. Where the movie will go next? I have a bunch of ideas for it. It's all in the end titles." "We have to make them, of course, Machete Kills and Machete Kills Again, Rodriguez explains. "Once you put it out there, just like we did with the trailer, you have to make it." That's not exactly true, although Machete was certainly one of the two or three most memorable things about Grindhouse. But again, let's see what the movie does in a couple weeks. The trailers are a lot of fun but I do think it's an uphill battle: A hard-R action movie led by Danny Trejo building off the "momentum" of one of the most high-profile flops of the past five years.

Machete in space will have a hard time throwing his machetes at the astronauts who in turn will have a hard time firing their tommyguns at him. I like the description so far, sounds like Kill Bill but with characters and setting that appeal to me. I think Machete is what Expendables are trying hard to make everyone believe they are, while the movie still plays. Just saw them on Euronews in NY Stock exchange, what the hell were they doing there? It's funny, cause Stallone and the gang had to start from scratch with their movie, and Rodriguez already had his promo, the real thing that wowed everybody, not just a premise of getting DeNiro and Seagal in one movie. Stallone as good as he is, is just not good enough a screenwriter, he's no fun. The closest he ever came to doing a brainless but graceful action movie was Cobra and he never did it again. Rodriguez on the contrary is all about fun. If it isn't funny or spectacular - he doesn't do it. The Machete promos feel like Eye of the Tiger, Exterminator, Harley Davidson & the Marlboro Man, or the zany Charles Bronson 80s flicks, whilst Expendables sadly felt and looked nothing like that, but more like a mix of Fast and Furious and Space Cowboys.
