Jim Carrey To Star in 'Mr. Popper's Penguins'

It may not have the bite of a Lisbeth Salander casting battle royale, but Mr. Popper's Penguins was a hot commodity this summer. Ben Stiller was originally attached, but he's walked away from it. That left the kids' book adaptation wide open and Owen Wilson, Jack Black, and Jim Carrey were among the names rumored for the part. The Playlist says that Carrey has gotten the call, and that's good news for him. Weird year: That Tweeting binge, which saw Carrey unload on Elin Woods and his split with Jenny McCarthy, was back in April. His film I Love You, Phillip Morris is entrenched in a lawsuit and won't ever get released in the US, and there's the continuing downward trend of his box office performances. Of course, with Black and Wilson, that last part is also true. Stiller, too, although to a lesser degree overall. But Carrey has a batch of films waiting to go, and this has the biggest commercial potential of all of them. The movie could go into production this year, with Bolt screenwriter Jared Stern rewriting the original screenplay and Mark Waters (Spiderwick Chronicles, Mean Girls) set to direct. Synospis:

"A modest house painter receives from Admiral Drake's Antarctica explorations a penguin in the mail. Well, one penguin turns into 12 Adelie penguins and the Poppers find the only way to keep everyone fed and a roof over their heads is to turn the penguins into performers."

Can't argue with penguins, that's for sure. Unless you're Batman.
