Sunday, August 22, 2010 at 9:48AM Box Office - 'The Expendables' Beats Expendables
A pretty firm hold on last weekend's audience numbers helped The Expendables win at the box office for the second straight week. It still has a while to go before it's in the black, but the $80 million action flick has now made $65 million in ten days.

Usually with action films, particularly ones that aren't that great, a second weekend drop of 55 - 60% is in order. Expendables, aided by weak competition everywhere, only lost about 53%, so it was the clear winner this weekend with $16.5 million.
Vampires Suck was fairly consistent for most of its five days in theaters, although its weekend draw was nothing to get excited about. It took expected hits on Thursday and Sunday, but it's going to be in the win column for Fox after another week or so, which means, and I'm speculating here, 3-D Movie can be made next year.
None of the other new releases displayed much heat, either. Lottery Ticket made $11 million, Piranha 3D drew ten, and Nanny McPhee Returns and The Switch both made around $8 million. And yet, with five new releases, the number one movie is a week old.
Also-rans Eat Pray Love and The Other Guys split up a couple of the new movies to fill out the top five, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World sank to number ten after two weeks and will wind up losing about $30 million for Universal, before marketing costs and all that, Toy Story 3 passed Spider-Man on the all-time US box office list and is one of only eleven films to make $400, but five of those have come in the past five years. It's still rare that it happens, though.
The Top Five:
1 - The Expendables ($16.5 million)
2 - Vampires Suck ($12.2 million, $18.5 million five-day total)
3 - Eat Pray Love ($12 million)
4 - Lottery Ticket ($11.1 million)
5 - The Other Guys ($10.1 million)
