Monday, August 30, 2010 at 7:17PM Darren Aronofsky Eyed for 'Wolverine' Sequel
Yeah, I'm going to vote no here. I really like Darren Aronofsky and all, but should he direct what is for the moment uncomfortably titled X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2? Given the state of the X-Men franchise, why would Aronofsky go for scraps?

Before we annoint him, though, we should say that David Slade is still the favorite, according to MovieWeb, and no offense to Slade, but he's more the guy you hire to stir the pot, while Aronofsky's more your world
-renowned chef. Perhaps that's a bad analogy, but I think you get the point: Slade's a workmanlike director who's perfect for studio-driven projects and Aronofsky is one of the few filmmakers best left to his own devices.
Part of this ascension is due to the fact that RED director Robert Schwentke has apparently dropped out of consideration pretty early in the process to focus on other opportunities. Another part has to be that, since Hugh Jackman is a producer of Wolverine these days, and he wants a better result, a bigger talent behind the camera could be a solution. And Jackman and Aronofsky worked together on The Fountain, so there you are.
If you were Aronofsky, would you want to be in the position of salvaging a property that hasn't produced a good movie since 2003? Especially when you don't have to? True, it isn't like he's become David Fincher and actually has studios crawling over themselves to let him make exactly the movies he wants to make exactly as he wants to make them, but Aronofsky is in a much better position than he was when The Fountain came out.
Also, I never really understood why he was a good choice for RoboCop. Again, this may be a bad analogy, but it's kind of like hiring Hemingway to re-write an Orson Scott Card book. And to a certain degree, that applies to Wolverine. There are guys who would be natural fits for the material, but I think Aronofsky is better off making movies he's best suited for, frankly.

But is 'Wolverine' really it? For the kind of film-maker he is, I would hope that this would be a starting from scratch kind of affair. Personally, I don't want to see any more Wolverine movies like the last one, even though I don't have any problem with Hugh Jackman in the title roll. But Marvel and the studios have dug themselves into a hole here, and decided that this is the route they want to go.
If Aronsofsky really wants to bring something to what others have already begun, then why not sell out completely and just direct one of the 'Twilight' movies?
I'm with you, Colin. I don't like this one bit.
