Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at 11:22PM Violent, Racist Mel Gibson Still Just As Popular
There are two ways to look at this news. Well, three. But here are the first two: 1) People are pretty damn forgiving, or 2) Mad Mel doesn't have a whole lot of box office appeal left, anyway.

According to a CBS News poll, because CBS is apparently up-to-speed on all the other news in the world, More than 75% of Americans surveyed aren't too bothered by Mel Gibson's reprehensible phone tirades directed at his ex-girlfriend, Olga Grigorieva. That's not just men, either: 80% of men and a surprising 72% of women said the audio tapes released this summer have "no effect" on whether or not they might buy tickets to see a future Mel Gibson movie.
So that's the first way to look at. The second way is to note that these people sure didn't pay to see Edge of Darkness, so how valid can these responses be? Sure, I get that it's not exactly Lethal Weapon, do you think they'll show up in droves for The Beaver?
And, incidentally, Apocalypto didn't set the world on fire on the heels of a big Mel scandal, either. However, that was in a foreign language and it did do pretty well worldwide. I do find the results a little surpising, however. Olga may or may not be a golddigger, but Mel absolutely said he hoped she would deserve a gang raping for dressing provocatively and threatened to kill her. That probably would change my mind.
