Matt Reeves: 'Cloverfield' Sequel Still "A Priority"

I don't know that there's a lot of middle ground on the subject of Cloverfield; you either get it and dig it or you don't. I dig it, although I can understand why people think it's much ado about very little. But I do think they're wasting a bit of time getting the sequel going. It's been two-and-a-half years already, and it will be at least four before the follow-up gets here. But it will happen, according to the film's director Matt Reeves. "It really isn't the moment for [the sequel] to go any further than it has, but it continues to be a priority for both [JJ Abrams and I]," Reeves tells MTV. "JJ is very immersed in putting together Super 8. He's in pre-production and really, really passionately getting that together. And I'm passionately finishing Let Me In." Reeves does confirm what is already widely accepted, that Abrams' Super 8 - coming out the same weekend as Cloverfield in 2008 - is not part two of the Cloverfield story. "There literally is no connection whatsoever. It's just a really cool idea for a film. I know what he's doing and it's amazing." Let Me In is out in October, Super 8 will be in theaters in January, and then...maybe? I don't think anyone wants to wait five years or more for this sequel.

If they've got a story that stands on it's own, done for a low budget - it could work. The phenomenon could work the way "Silence of the Lambs" came out and then everybody discovered "Manhunter". The FANS make the connection but to everybody else, they're just two different movies. They simply CAN'T make another "one-camera" horror movie, even if it came out six months after the first one.
