Monday, September 13, 2010 at 6:03PM Jovovich announces plans for 'Resident Evil 5'
Speaking with New York Magazine, Resident Evil star Milla Jovovich said, "It's the biggest movie in the franchise. So we're definitely going to make another one."
The Resident Evil franchise is a bit of an anomaly. Movies based on video games typically end up being unwatchable bombs. Even incredibly popular franchises like Super Mario Brothers, Mortal Kombat and Doom have struggled to adapt their games into films fans want to see.
Against the odds, director Paul W.S. Anderson and Co. have discovered a winning formula with these films. They may not be high art, but they are consistently entertaining and filled with enough action to keep people coming back for more. I think a lot of the credit goes to Jovovich, who has become a surprisingly convincing action star. I also give credit to Anderson for wisely marrying Jovovich - that was a smart move on his part.
Also to their credit is the fact that they are clearly in touch with their fan base. They are taking that a step farther in Resident Evil 5, going so far as to hit up fans directly on Twitter to get feedback. According to Jovovich:
"We've been talking to a lot of fans on Twitter. So it's probably going to be one of the first movies where we really talk to fans to see what they want, and what characters they want to see. It's going to be a more interactive process."Personally, I'm starting to feel a bit burnt out on this franchise, but with the success of Afterlife, it's clear that there is still a strong interest in these movies. Fans are clamoring for more of Alice versus the Umbrella Corporation, so I don't fault Jovovich and Anderson for giving it to them.
