If he looks concerned: it's only the mustache.
Columbia Pictures has released the trailer for The Tourist, a remake of the 2005 French film Anthony Zimmer. I know, I know. "More remakes?", you say? However, I'm going to give this one the benefit of the doubt, as long as I can, for a few reasons. For one: Johnny Depp. Far from the swoon-inducing days of yore (let it be known he still does that for me), Depp has emerged as someone who takes great care in the roles he accepts; he does not often disappoint. Angelina Jolie, as well, (though last I checked, she already made a spy-thriller this year), still manages to attract my attention when she's involved in a project. The two on screen together, as you can see from the early trailer, have a palpable electricity between them.
The cast is rounded out by Paul Bettany, Rufus Sewell, and Timothy Dalton. (You can translate those names to They Guy You Know from Everything, The Go-To Bad Guy, and James Bond, if that makes it easier.) I've been missing Bettany on my screen in particular; he's another actor who makes interesting choices (we're going to give him a pass on Wimbeldon, for now.) And Dalton should be interesting, especially since the last he was on-screen was during the gap-year specials of Doctor Who; it would be grand to see him menace someone without that ridiculous costume.
Story-wise, The Tourist looks like an interesting romance/thriller. It's so funny when they pair words like that together. Romance/Thriller. It's like saying "Outerspace-Boogaloo," and hoping you get your point across.
But I digress, The Tourist is about a vacationer, Frank (Depp), who meets the gorgeous Elise (Jolie) on a train, and soon finds out that he's been unwittingly thrust into whatever international intrigue Elise is involved in. Turns out, she's merely chosen him as a foil to distract her pursuers. We can only assume that many sexy/dangerous adventures ensue.
From the trailer, however, the film looks smartly directed by Lives of Others' Florian Henckel von Donnersmark, and Depp delivers his various quips and observations with usual grace, while Jolie is a vision, as is her norm. The film is due for release on December 10th; let's go ahead and look forward to see if it lives up to it's big name talent.
