Thursday, September 16, 2010 at 2:31PM Sony Pictures Classics Buys Rights to New Almodóvar: Life is Better En Espanol.
"You're amazing." "No, YOU'RE amazing."
Get ready, North America; SPC has once again graciously bought the rights to Pedro Almodóvar's new film, The Skin I Live In (La Piel Que Habito), and I could not be more thrilled. A lot me being thrilled is due to the fact that Almodóvar is a stone-cold genius, but a lot is also due to the joy of getting to see Antonio Banderas not voicing a cartoon character (I could mean Puss-In-Boots or the Nasonex Bee, you decide).
The Skin I Live In is the story of Ledgard (Banderas), a plastic surgeon bent on avenging the death of his daughter. Based on the novel by Thierry Jonquet, the plot sounds right up Almodóvar's alley: Revenge! Murder! Antonio Banderas!
The director is known for re-using his stars from past films (Banderas himself was in 1988's Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervio), and Skin is no exception; the film also stars Elena Anaya and Marisa Paredes, both from 2002's Talk to Her (Hable con Ella). The wealth of talent alone coupled with Almodóvar's innate ability should make this another one worth watching. And let's be honest, if you like his films, you go out of your way to never miss a new one, and this should be no exception.
SPC has this to say about the rights acquisition: “Almodóvar and Sony Pictures Classics are family and have been for two decades. We are so happy to be together again with Pedro, Agustin, Barbara, and the entire team at El Deseo on this new film which promises not only to be Almodóvar at his most intriguing, but also at his very best."
Oh, I'm just thrilled, did I mention I was thrilled?

We think is because he always makes movies about homosexuality and the repression of this feelings in other cultures like in America, makes people to want to watch his films.
He is not so considered here, in fact there's always jokes about his films being always the same.
Tampoco te pases... el "we" si lo cambias por el "I" mejor.
I don't like Almodovar but he is quite well considered in Spain. And I don't think his success in the US has something to do with homosexuality.
