Movie Review - 'Secretariat'

Secretariat Starring Diane Lane, John Malkovich Directed by Randall Wallace Rated PG

The challenge in making a movie like Secretariat stems from the fact that pretty much everybody already knows the story. In case you're one of the few who don't, I won't ruin the nearly 40-year-old spoiler for you here, but suffice it to say that the where of this movie isn't a surprise, it's the how that most are coming to see.

What screenwriter Mike Rich has done is focus on the journey of how Secretariat gained his place in history. He does so in the typical, PG-rated, overly-dramatized Disney fashion, but this is a pretty acceptable way to make up for the foregone conclusion nature of the film. What gets annoying is how he relies too much on dialogue to fast-forward through the exposition of his story; it feels a bit forced when characters tell each other things they already know just for our benefit. The movie is made almost as a throwback sort of period piece of the late-60s/early-70s: everybody speaks in grandiose metaphors, and they have a knack for saying just the right thing to each other to elicit a long, drawn-out, satisfied smile.

The story is told mainly through the eyes of Penny Chenery (Diane Lane), who in 1969 inherits control of a Virginia horse farm. She hires a trainer named Lucien Laurin (John Malkovich) to teach her newly-acquired young colt to race. Laurin, an eccentric French-Canadian—as one character puts it, he "dresses like Superfly"—is made into a stereotype of a character here: he uses some unconventional means to push the horse to achieve its goals, but his methods are sometimes so crazy they just might work. Stop me if you've heard this one before.

Diane Lane seems to be channeling her inner Tippi Hedren in this role. Her speech, her mannerisms, her wardrobe, her large forehead, her melodramatic acting—it all evokes Melanie Daniels from The Birds, although Secretariat takes place almost a decade later than that film. Lane plays Chenery as a headstrong woman who has a certain cockiness to her, because she knows exactly what she wants and exactly how to get it. She wants to have a winning horse, yes, but she has financial motivation for this desire, too. She comes across as shrewdly likable, which in my book means Diane Lane has done her job well.

Penny all but completely ditches her family to spend a few years seeing her horse rise to fame. Her husband (Dylan Walsh) is annoyed that she's using her maiden name—the name of the family farm where her father breeds the horses. She misses a large part of her children growing up, especially the formidable coming-of-age of her oldest daughter (Amanda Michalka). But Penny is driven, and it's not unclear why: she takes the time on many occasions to espouse on the matter, indulging in those grand speeches about how you don't know far you can go until you run, by golly. Swell the music. Hold it for a second to let the supposed depth of what she just said sink in, then cut to a sunrise to indicate that it's now the next day. This is how this movie goes, and director Randall Wallace knows the formula well. (If his name sounds familiar, by the way, it's probably either because you're a fan of Braveheart—which he wrote—or you've been watching the most recent season of "Entourage".)

When Secretariat (the horse) races, Secretariat (the movie) almost treats it as an afterthought. Wallace at times seems to be going out of his way to avoid showing any more of the horse races than he has to. Some of the racing sequences, the on-track close-ups in particular, appear to have been shot on video, and the effect is a bit jarring and off-putting. And then there's a race that is shown entirely via a TV broadcast, while Penny's family watches from their living room.

There is some on-track action, but it's definitely not the focus of the film. Secretariat is more about warm-fuzzies than it is about the specifics of horse racing. Nelsan Ellis, who you may recognize as Lafayette from "True Blood", plays a stable manager with the to-be-expected special connection with the horse—we even see him sleeping on some hay in the stable the night before a big race. Ellis manages to avoid falling into "magical negro" mode, but just barely—Rich's screenplay treads the edges of this particular stereotype on several occasions. The horse is given some human-like qualities, and I'd even say he's deified at times. Random and inconsistent voice-overs, most of which make the occasional Biblical reference, reinforce this—as does the gospel music that blares on the soundtrack when Secretariat wins a big race. There's a lot of that Disney-style magic here, and it can be a bit overboard, but Wallace manages to keep it reined in for the most part.

I think when it comes down to it, there are basically two kinds of people. There are those who watch a movie where the characters talk about following their souls' desires and become wrapped up in it, and then there are those who roll their eyes and groan when confronted with such dialogue. There's really no in-between. If you're the former type, then even if you know what Secretariat is setting out to achieve, you'll still cheer when you see it happen on the big screen. If you're the latter type, you'll be confused by the responses of those other people in the theater with you. But that doesn't mean you won't be wishing you were as into it as they are.

I'm a sucker for inspirational sports movies, even if I'm never really interested in them, I always find myself liking them regardless. From Miracle to Glory Road to Rudy and whatever else has come out, I always enjoy watching them. I feel the same way about this film. I got invited to see it at a special screening and skipped out. I'll probably skip the theatrical run, but I'm sure that I'll love it when I rent it on DVD or see it on HBO or something.

Even if it does have those flaws....I will go. I can say truthfully that every time I've seen Secretariat run--from watching him on TV win the Triple Crown to videos later on, to documentaries about race horses-- every. single. time. I weep. His grace and beauty and the way he made it look so effortless...I weep in appreciation of what he was. Nothing runs like a thoroughbred...I was privileged to be a exercise rider for a year... they run because it's simply what they do, and they take great joy in the task.

Lousy review. People don't watch History Channel to find out if the Germans lost at Stalingrad, they watch because it is a point of interest to them. We get to see a story from the owners point of view, not some announcer who remembers when or a news article that hits the main points briefly. And if I'm going to see a movie I want some 'grandiose metaphors' in the script and not how I talk to friends at the local bar. Here's a tip, review the movie you saw and not the one you think you could have made better.

As an avid horseracing fan/small time part owner and bettor I've had a picture of Secreteriat as my screen saver since I puchased a laptop ! Horseracing movies are generally extremely weak with woefully poor racing scenes but anything that draws attention to one of the greatest athletes ever is OK with me ! Seabiscuit was a terrific movie but really, in effect, was as much or more about the people involved as it was the horse ! Google Secreteriats' Belmont win and watch it several times. take into account that the previous (and subsequent ) times for the Belmont are nowhere near his AMAZING 2:24 flat ! After his death the autopsy revealed his heart weighed 20 LBS...the average horse has a heart that weighs 9 lbs ! WHAT AN AMAZING BEAST !!

i was hoping a movie about bigred would be made,but also hoping they wouldnt "hollywoodize" it.secretariats triple crown run was fantastic,i remember it like it was yesterday.if he were a man,he would be arnold swarzenegger.the terminator.though he didnt win all his races,(he lost 5 out of 21),secretariet is in some opinions the best of all time.i dont share this opinion but his career was stellar.anxiuosly awaiting the premeire here in central ohio.i just hope they didnt glamourize it to much!
