Thursday, September 23, 2010 at 5:09PM New Christopher Guest Film May Feature Creepy Collectibles
Let's spread a rumor that they're calling it Hoarders: The Motion Picture
What we mean by "creepy collectibles" is that the new film will focus not so much on the collectibles themselves, but on the creepy people who collect them.
Christopher Guest has brought us fantastic ensemble pieces such as Best In Show, This is Spinal Tap and Waiting For Guffman over the years and while his most recent film, For Your Consideration, wasn't as well-recieved as some of the earlier work, it's safe to hope that the new film will show a return to top-form.
Guest, along with regular collaborators Harry Shearer and Michael McKean hope to assemble the usual comic ensemble and some new faces for the new project, including Parker Posey and Jane Lynch. It'll focus on a group of retro collectors and the items they cherish. And we can assume these people collect weird stuff, here. Like bottle caps, toenail clippings, and the Head of St. John the Baptist kind of weird. Expect no less from Guest. Maybe we can think of it like "Antiques Roadshow" without the sedatives.
Either way, a new Guest film is always something to look forward to. Lets just hope (well-deserved) busy folks like Ms. Lynch aren't too busy polishing their Emmys to make time to shoot it.

For me, For Your Consideration was a disappointment, but just about everything Guest has done is an absolute comedic classic. I feel that the narrower the target for satire means the funnier the movie will be, usually, which is why the stronger parodies are the ones that are take offs of specific movies or targets ( Shaun of the Dead, Best in Show, In the Loop ).
I agree completely! Any film that focuses on a specific, narrow facet of society, and sticks to that world view successfully, is definitely the more successful comedic work for me. Take a film like Death to Smoochy for example; I know plenty of people who HATED that movie, but I found it very enjoyable, mostly because it really stuck to its guns about WHAT it was parodying, and never once felt the need to try for a broader perspective. Christopher Guest always provides that experience for me as well. That being said, and as I said above, I am very much looking forward to the next film.
