Friday, September 24, 2010 at 10:05AM Kate Beckinsale Signs on for 'Underworld 4' but Hubby Not Directing
For what it is, the Underworld series have been a hit for Lakeshore Entertainment and Screen Gem Pictures. Afterall, the studio spent $25 - $50 million for each of the three movies, and it has generated $300 million total at the box office. So like any studio, they'll milk this one till the very last drop and Kate Beckinsale will come back to the series once again.
In a press release sent yesterday, producers say Beckinsale will be back to play Serene, the heroine in the vampires vs. werewolves story. The script is finished but Kate's husband Len Wiseman, who directed the first two films will be on the sidelines as a producer. If you recall, Beckinsale actually wasn't in 'Underworld: Rise of the Lycans', she did however, narrate the film. But it'll be good to have one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood back to the series she's know for.
The press release goes on to state that in additional to a director search, they are also searching for a young actress to play Serene's daughter. One thing's for sure, if this film grosses over $50 million, get ready for Underworld 5!

It's kinda' like how girlfriends of mine differentiate video games - this is the BOY vampire movie series as opposed to the "Twilight" series. I'll take it. And Beckinsale too. Two please. Thank you.
It looks like they're taking this into the future since there's a daughter that's come from the sexual union in the second one. I thought if they did another they would just pick up from the third with Rhona Mitra as the heroine vampire. My theory is; these kind of "het" vampire movies - like this and "Blade" and other more "action" type vampire movies - counter the more female and homo-erotic vampire movies like "Twilight" and ones made from Anne Rice novels. Supposedly there are more vampire movies than any other genre so a kind of balance has evolved in them over the last century and particularly after "The Omega Man" or at least that action element is an ATTEMPT at some kind of patriarchal/heterosexual balance.
I want Kate Beckinsale to play in the next Underworld movie.
