Saturday, September 4, 2010 at 3:34AM Addition by Subtraction for New 'Judge Dredd' Movie
IM Global promised to do more with Judge Dredd than we saw in the shoddy 1990s movie with Sylvester Stallone. But that was a long time ago and nothing much happened until Comic-Con, when the company announced Karl Urban (Star Trek) would be playing the Mega City One street judge, who can, as the famous saying goes, act as judge, jury, and executioner.

Urban's a good pick, and we'd already heard that there'd be a bigger commitment to the original comic, which is a good idea. Now, as IM preps for a chance to sell the movie to distributors at the Toronto Film Festival, comes a couple new items of note, including the film's even-more-simplistic name. Let's hope that carries over to some of the visual aspects, too, to make the film a little rougher on the outside.
The new title is Dredd, which I actually like a lot. It's guttural, hard to mistake for something else, and stripped down. And the film has added Olivia Thirlby, whose big movie is probably Juno, but she had a bigger role (and was actually pretty good) in The Wackness a couple years ago.
According to Comic Book Movie, Thirlby will play Cassandra Anderson, "a telepathic rookie who shadows Dredd." Peter Travis, whose previous film, Vantage Point, was a silly Rashomon, but it actually was a pretty big hit, as those things go. I'm more excited that Alex Garland (28 Days Later) is writing the script, and that it's shooting in South Africa.
I don't think the names Urban, Thirlby, and Travis are enough for a lot of distributors to throw a lot behind this, especially in the wake of lesser-known comic book properties underperforming in the past couple years. And none of those had the stench of failure this one does by virtue of the Stallone film. Tough sell, in other words.
