Monday, September 6, 2010 at 11:36AM Terry Gilliam Still Waiting for 'Don Quixote' Financing
Here we go again: Ten years removed from the Don Quixote movie that was somewhat literally washed away, Terry Gilliam has attracted Robert Duvall and Ewan McGregor for another go at it. However, it appears that money is again an issue, so who knows when this might happen.

"The financing collapsed about a month and a half ago," Gilliam said Saturday at the Deauville American Film Festival. "I shouldn't be here. The plan was to be shooting Quixote right now."
This isn't the first time the money has dried up; the first time around, The Man Who Killed Don Quixote lost millions because of a flood and insurance hassles and even though he's been pretty profitable (only Fear and Loathing failed to make money back theatrically, but certainly on DVD, it's done well enough to make up the difference), so it's a little surprising that financiers aren't eager to work with Gilliam again. Maybe they think it's cursed, which is not a sentiment Gilliam shares, although he certainly cops to the whole thing being frustrating.
"Don Quixote gives me something to look forward to, always. Maybe the most frightening thing is to actually make the film," the director observed.
I do hope it all comes together, just so Gilliam can finally get it made. Doesn't look too promising, though. And in the meantime, Warner Bros. recently announced it was going to do the Sherlock Holmes thing with the Don Quixote story, which could put the pressure on this project even more.
