'Lord of the Rings' Extended Edition Blu-Rays Coming This Year?

In full disclosure, I've never really been a Lord of the Rings fan.  I mean I enjoyed Peter Jackson's films well enough, but I never read Tolkien's novels and I certainly didn't think they should have swept the Oscars in 2004.  So I definitely wasn't one of those up in arms when the trilogy was released on blu-ray last April in their original theatrical versions instead of Jackson's extended cuts.  That was until I sat down and watched those extended editions over this holiday break.  After finishing the last film, I looked at my friend who made me watch them and all I could say was, "And why aren't those on blu-ray?"

Well now it appears that Warner Bros. (apparently the only studio that can do anything right these days) is ready to right this wrong a lot sooner than anyone expected.

According to The Digital Bits:

Our sources are NOW telling us that WHV (and their now in-house New Line label) is ALSO planning to release Peter Jackson’s long-awaited The Lord of the Rings Trilogy: Extended Editions on Blu-ray sometime this year. No kidding. We suspect that, now that The Hobbit films are finally about to begin filming, the studio is eager to get more product on store shelves to keep the franchise fresh in the minds of fans.

The idea of keeping the franchise fresh in people's minds is great, but 2011 seems a little early.  Especially with the first Hobbit film not hitting theaters until December 2012.  If the report is true and the extended blu-rays are released this year I wouldn't expect them until at the earlier November for the holidays.  But, if I were a betting man (and my girlfriend can attest that I am) I wouldn't expect them until 2012.  In this case, however, I would love to be proved wrong.
