Over two weeks ago, Billy Ray submitted a script to Fox for a movie adaptation of the hit TV series, 24. However, the script was turned down and the storyline is officially dead. However, Entertainment Weekly caught up with executive producer of 24, Howard Gordon and in the interview he shares that while they may need a new version of the script there is a person in Hollywood who can save it.

Says Howard, "There is talk about re-approaching it. I understand Tony Scott is meeting with Kiefer to talk about ideas. People are still talking about it."
So can Tony Scott save it? Absolutely. He's a hot shot producer/director who can get films up and running to production in a hurry. Do I think he'll take it? No. The guy already has a pretty full schedule. He's currently producing and directing Emma's War, after that, he'll do Postdamer Platz, followed by the Alien Prequel in 2013. If he does sign on, this film won't get made till 2013 or 2014 and by then, I think the show will grow stale.
Someone else will need to save this project in my opinion.

It's Ridley who's directing the Alien Prequel, not Tony.
With their company Scott Free, Ridley and Tony Scott DO seem to work together a lot here the last several years.
I think the whole thing with the 24 movie is - are they continuing the series or are they making 24 into a movie franchise that stands on it's own. The early rumors were that they were making a sort of finale with Jack Bauer - and I mean, really - who wants to get excited about a movie where you see your hero get killed off! So whatever is happening means they're starting over completely to make this a MOVIE franchise since continuations of tv series have failed. "X Files" and "Sex and the City" fizzled out after long runs and cult shows with limited audiences like "Serenity" didn't grow into any larger following either. I think they're trying to open this up and make it bigger for a bigger movie audience.
MM, Tony is producing Aliens. I guess I could've made that clearer. Thanks!
How hard can this be? I mean you are eliminating 22 episodes, so there is no random stray plot twist like Kim caught in a cougar trap.
If Kim Bauer is in the movie, it MUST be in 3D.
Really though, the entire series comprises only eight individual days, there are plenty of days in between those in which they could set events. They talked about this for the series - jumping back to days before or in between previous "days". They were concerned this would disrupt the continuity between seasons and would confuse the audience. But if they wanted to make the movie - or movies - a stand-alone franchise, returning to other previous 24-hour crises would be a perfect premise.
