Friday, January 21, 2011 at 8:54AM James Franco, Benicio Del Toro to Join Michael Shannon in 'The Iceman'
At first, I rolled my eyes after reading the headline about another hitman themed movie in the works. But that initial disappointment turned into intrigue when I saw the names signed on to star in The Iceman.
James Franco fresh off what I'm told is a very funny uncredited cameo in The Green Hornet will join Benicio Del Toro in a supporting role of Michael Shannon in the upcoming drama about mob hitman Richard Kuklinski a.k.a The Ice Man, according to slashfilm.com.

The Iceman is one of two film versions about Kuklinski headed to the big screen, with director Ariel Vromen's version expected to start filming first. The other film, The Iceman: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer has been in development for awhile now with Mickey Rourke attached as the lead. The Iceman screenplay by Morgan Land is based on Anthony Bruno's book "The Iceman: The True Story of a Cold-Blooded Killer".
Here's the plot synopsis for The Iceman from the film's press release:
THE ICEMAN is an electrifying true story of Richard Kuklinski (Shannon), a notorious mob contract killer and loving family man. He earned his nickname by freezing the bodies of his victims, disguising the time of death, and throwing police off track. He was a man who used his tendencies toward violence and detachment from consequence to create an idyllic family life. His family and neighbors believed he was an average businessman, having no idea about his deadly alternate life. Kuklinski killed over one hundred people during his life. He never felt remorse for anything he had done, except hurting his family. Del Toro co-stars as Kuklinski's employer, the notorious mobster Roy Demeo, and Franco plays his mentor assassin known as Mr. Softee.
If anyone who has seen Shannon's character, Agent Nelson Van Alden on the HBO series Boardwalk Empire, they may agree with me in saying that this role seems tailor made for an actor like Shannon.
No start date for The Iceman has been released, but previous reports have suggested that filming could begin this summer.
