Sunday, January 23, 2011 at 7:09AM Cheadle Talks Iron Man, Says War Machine Spin-off is in Development
Cheadle explained: "They're developing it now, they're working on that. I think they've hired a writer, so we'll see how it goes. It would be a lot of fun."
When asked if his character would appear in The Avengers, Cheadle said: "I don't think he shows up. I think he's kind of a lone wolf."
After the jump, you can see the full interview (where he is also asked his thoughts on Jon Favreau not returning to direct Iron Man 3) ...
I can't say I'm really very excited for a War Machine film. I think Cheadle is a great actor, but after The Avengers and Iron Man 3, I'm just not sure how many more Iron Man-related films we really need. But in the end, I guess it just comes down to whether or not they can write a compelling enough script (or at least one good enough to put butts in movie seats).

I think a War Machine movie could be cool if they made it different enough from Iron Man. Unlike Tony Stark who doesn't answer to anyone but himself, James Rhodes works for the military. This means the film could ask some interesting questions like how would the military use a weapon like the War Machine suit and what if the operator disagreed with his commanders. It would have to work hard to prove it isn't just a poor man's Iron Man, but in the right hands I think it could be done.
I'd like to see this go a darker route than Iron Man. War Machine, just from his on screen appearance, seems a lot darker with how loaded the armor is with weapons. Rhodes also seems very pro-military, so it'd be interesting to see how far he takes it with the War Machine suit.
