'J. Edgar' Cast Gets Even More Interesting With Addition of Naomi Watts

Director Clint Eastwood's Hoover biopic J. Edgar just keeps adding more and more interesting names to its cast. After landing Leonardo DiCaprio to fill the titular role, Eastwood and team have also signed Armie Hammer from The Social Network to play his alleged lover, the oft-overlooked Josh Lucas to play Charles Lindbergh, and Gossip Girl's Ed Westwick as the clean-cut agent who Hoover hires to write his biography. And now Naomi Watts has signed on to play the original FBI director's longtime secretary, according to Deadline.

This probably isn't how she'll look in the film, I just really like this picture.

Watts is taking on the role that had previously been earmarked for Charlize Theron, but scheduling changes have shuffled things around for both actresses. Theron is going to be portraying the Evil Queen in Snow White and the Huntsman instead, which works out well for Eastwood and fellow producers Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, and Robert Lorenz—it turns out Naomi was their first choice for the part anyway, but until recently it didn't seem she'd be available.

Watts' character, Helen Gandy, was Hoover's secretary for 54 years, and was allegedly the keeper of all of his skeletons. She's also said to have had a lot of influence on the inner workings of the Bureau, and that's not much of a surprise, considering how close she was to Hoover, and for how long. The most interesting bit, though, is this: "After Hoover died, Gandy spent weeks destroying his personal file, which contained the incriminating material that he used to manipulate and control the most powerful figures in D.C." Hopefully some of that made it into the screenplay, by Milk scribe Dustin Lance Black.

The movie sounds like it'll center around—or at least feature prominently—the case of the missing Lindbergh baby, often called "the crime of the [20th] century." It's scheduled for a 2012 release, so expect filming to begin soon. I'm guessing we'll be seeing this one hit theaters around Oscar season towards the end of next year.
