As a lifelong Beatles fan, I really don't know how to feel about this. On one hand, I really REALLY don't want to see one of the greatest bands of all time put through the ringer in a stupid comedy. But, on the other, it could be kind of fun if pulled off well (ala Fanboys). Either way, Get Back, a comedy about "two die-hard Beatles fans who, upon discovering a time machine, travel back in time to prevent John Lennon from ever meeting Yoko Ono, who they blame for breaking up the group."
Hit the jump to find out more about the film, those involved in making it and which hand I'm leaving towards because of it.
Get Back, which has a double meaning due to the time travel plot and being the last track on The Beatles' last album, is the first screenplay from Chris McCoy. While this would normally play into my skeptical hand, the script landed on the 2007 Black List of best unproduced screenplays and has been in development since. And, scripts just don't land on this list for no reason.
What does have me skeptical, however, is the choice of director in Mark Waters. Waters is currently finishing up work on Mr. Popper's Penguins with Jim Carrey, but the rest of the director's filmography has me nervous. I haven't liked anything he's made since 2004's Mean Girls and that was primarily because of Tina Fey's writing. I'm hoping there will be some encouraging glimpses in the Penguins trailer that we should be seeing soon.
As far as the film itself, there's no word yet as to how much of the band we'll actually see as the project will be portraying Yoko Ono in a... how should I put this?... less than positive light, and I'm assuming she controls the likeness rights to herself and the late John Lennon. So we could be getting a tip-toed around version of the band like George Lucas in the aforementioned Fanboys rather than the in-your-face-meet-The-Beatles treatment in Walk Hard (which I'm kind of hoping for the former).
The casting of the two fans (as well as the band if we actually see them on screen) will also be crucial to this kind of film working. And, as Waters plans to shoot Get Back in London this summer immediately after he's finished post on Mr. Popper's Penguins, I'd expect casting to come in the next few months.
