And here I thought it was going to be another slow news weekend, then I sit down and find this staring right back at me. And while not quite as fun of a rumor-mill as the The Dark Knight Rises casting rumors, there have been a ton of names tossed around. But all that is done; Zack Snyder has found his Superman: Man of Steel.
Ok, just who is this guy?
Several names have been tossed around for this role, including Jon Hamm from Mad Men. But instead, they've cast the relatively unknown Henry Cavill to play Clark Kent/Superman. Who is that, you ask? Good question.
Cavill might be best known as Charles Brandon in The Tudors, with roles in Stardust and Tristan & Isolde. The last two are films I've seen and I can't even place him. He has two movies coming out soon, The Cold Light of Day and Immortals, so I'll have to check those out as well.
So yeah, I think Snyder definitely made an interesting choice here. Choosing a relatively unknown actor for such a big role can be good and bad; the blank slate theory can work both ways. At least he looks the part.

It's not as much of a surprise as most might think because Cavill was one of the finalists being considered for Nolan's Batman. And, as Nolan is exec producing this I'm sure he had something to do with the choice... Plus, he really is a solid actor and I'm excited to see him getting the credit he deserves.
Didn't know he was one of the guys up for Batman. But I'd still like to see him in something before I make my opinion, I think The Tudors can be streamed from Netflix.
I LOVE Henry Cavill. Consider me excited for this movie.
I have seen Henry Cavill in The Tudors (one of the 2 actors to appear in all the episodes) - I liked him a lot in that. He would make a good Superman - but I don't know if he would make a good Clark Kent.
I'm really happy with the casting news of Henry Cavill as the new Superman. My first choice would have been Jon Hamm, but even he admits that he is too old for the role. I enjoyed Cavill in The Tudors and Stardust.
You mention that he is a relatively unknown actor which could go either way. I like that it was not a major Hollywood actor. Cavill has a strong screen presence and will bring something new to the role.
However, I think it's interesting that two Brits (Andrew Garfield in the new Spider-Man reboot) have been cast in these seemingly all-American superhero films.
