Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at 3:55AM 'Monsters' Director Gareth Edwards Attached to 'Godzilla' Reboot

One of my favorite films of 2010 was one that really came out of nowhere. I first heard about director Gareth Edwards' indie/sci-fi flick Monsters after this year's Cannes Film Festival. It had picked up a ton of internet buzz because of what the director was able to do on such a low budget (some report the film as being made for no more than $15,000). Some reviews touted Edwards as the next Neill Blomkamp, but the film never gained a theatrical release and the buzz began to taper off.
I watched Monsters On Demand a few months ago and was simply blown away. Not only was what Edwards did with special effects on his budget unreal, he managed to create a feeling of suspense throughout the film unlike anything I've seen in years. Even Roger Ebert chose Monsters as one of his favorite films of 2010. And, apparently we weren't the only two impressed by Edwards' work as Legendary Pictures just tapped the director to helm their upcoming Godzilla reboot.
After my viewing of Monsters, the only way I could really describe the film to a friend of mine was as "Cloverfield's socially conscious, hipster, little brother." She laughed at me, but after she viewed the film she couldn't have agreed more. And, that is exactly why Gareth Edwards is the perfect man for this job. He has proven that he can make a thrilling monster movie with substance, and I can only imagine what the director will be able to do with the inflated budget of this project.
Nothing else is really known about the next Godzilla film itself other than that it's supposed to be a throwback of sorts to the original series and David Callaham had written a first draft (which will now be taken over by an unknown scribe). At one point Tim Burton was close to inking a deal to direct, but thankfully he passed to work on Monsterpocalypse. Now that the film has its director, story details should begin to filter out slowly but surely and my interest in this film will continue to skyrocket.
In the meantime, check out the trailer for Monsters below. And, if it's available On Demand with your cable or satellite provider I highly recommend you give it a chance.

It took me awhile to warm up to "Monsters" - it's basically Francis ford Coppola's "The Rain People" with a science fiction element weaved into it. But after the obnoxious failure of "Skyline", to contrast it, you realize it's a more substantive sci-fi movie than it's initial "independent road-movie" impression makes.
It'll be interesting to see what Edwards is able to do then with Godzilla. Will he continue to let it be a hommage to junk-food cinema or will he try to use it some way to capture some cathartic sense of the time like the very first, original, Japanese version of Godzilla did.
not that this is related in anyway it just reminded me, what ever happened to cloverfield 2? i coulda sworn they were planning a sequel.
Well some think that next summer's "Super 8" is a sort of sequel/prequel type thing, but we won't know til we see it. Basically they've said they're not doing one, but J.J. Abrams probably came up with a really complex, overarching premise for "Cloverfield", the same as he did for "Lost" and "Fringe", and I doubt he wants it to go to waste, so that's why I'm one of the believers that "Super 8" will be a kind of - retro - "Cloverfield", they're just not promoting it as such so they can bring in a newer, larger audience perhaps. It fits in with the whole "found footage" genre, and maybe that's why they've gone ahead with it, despite the fact that "Cloverfield" didn't do really big numbers. So maybe it's a "Cloverfield" sequel if you're a "Cloverfield" fan, and if you're not, it's something new. Again, we'll see when we see it.
Please no reboot, nobody wants to see it again.
Blame the "Transformers" for igniting the desire for catharsis of seeing giant things smash stuff.
