Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at 2:09PM Rockwell Official for 'Cogan's Trade:' Will Dominik Complete the Trio?
Sam Rockwell is good in everything. There, I said it. It’s on the internet now, and thus irrefutable (right?).
Rockwell in Duncan Jones' Moon. See this movie immediately.Anyway, because he is good in everything, anything he signs up for is at least worth watching, if only to see him in action. And if Cogan’s Trade wasn’t already shaping up to have a strong cast as we reported earlier this month, we can now say that Rockwell is, for all intents and purposes, officially in as the film’s star. But with Brad Pitt already on board, will writer/director Andrew Dominik complete the trio he formed in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford?
If you saw the aforementioned film (and if you didn't, for shame), you’ll know that the third part of the puzzle is Casey Affleck, himself a delight to behold in many of his roles. From what we’ve been hearing, he, too, is likely to sign on for Cogan’s Trade any day now.
These three already work so well together, and the “ensemble heist” qualities of the film’s storyline seems to read like a tougher version of the Ocean’s films, so we already know that Affleck and Pitt have the concept well in hand, having featured in all three films in that franchise. Using Rockwell in the title role in lieu of Ocean’s George Clooney is inspired, though. He may not (yet!) have the box office pull that Clooney does, but he’s got the gravitas and visceral, raw talent to carry anything, regardless of how famous his co-stars are.
This is overall just excellent news; Rockwell in a big-screen starring role, possibly backed up by some other rumored co-stars like Mark Ruffalo, Josh Brolin and Javier Bardem. If Dominik can actually manage to pack this much talent into one film, it’s almost guaranteed to impress. We already know his writing skills are top notch, thanks to The Assassination of Jesse James, and that he culls brilliant performances from his actors. As long as the cast continues to shape up as well as it has in these early stages, Cogan’s Trade will be on a lot of folks’ “One’s to Watch” lists.

Yeah, last I read the only confirmed was Pitt. The addition of Rockwell alone puts this on my must see list.
