Saturday, October 1, 2011 at 1:32PM Kurt Russell Takes Costner's Place in 'Django Unchained'?
This dude knows westernsLess than a week ago, it was widely reported that Kevin Costner had withdrawn from Quentin Tarantino's upcoming western Django Unchained. Costner's scheduling conflict was Kurt Russell's gain, as he's now entered talks to take the role of evil Calvin Candie's (Leonardo DiCaprio) employee Ace Woody, THR reports.
If it Russell signs on to the cast, it will mark the first time Russell has worked with QT since the underwhelming Death Proof. Recent reports have indicated that Michael K. Williams (Omar from The Wire) and Laura Cayouette (Kill Bill Vol. 2) will also join the incredible cast soon. The cast already includes Jamie Foxx, DiCaprio, Christoph Waltz and Samuel L. Jackson.
Both Russell and Costner have starred in great westerns over the years, though Russell was by far the better of the Wyatt Earps with Tombstone. However, Costner's body of work in the western genre has been more impressive with exceptional performances in Dances with Wolves, Silverado and Open Range. Russell is a worthy back up for the role.
I'm very much looking forward to seeing QT's version of a western, and the story of an escaped slave (Foxx) turned bounty hunter should be an excellent one.
Django Unchained is scheduled to arrive in theaters Christmas Day in 2012.

Truth be told Russell may in fact be a better choice than Costner. Just my two cents.
Costner is going to regret backing out of this movie. Costner's career has been going downhill. Django would have given Costner a resurgence in career. I think Russell is going to be great.
