Quick declaration: I bow down to anything from nearly God-like creaotr Joss Whedon like any respectful fanboy would. With that I have kept my impressions of his theatrical directorial efforts of The Avengers to a respectable aweing. Certainly many comic book fans have been waiting for Marvel's long-gestating franchise culmination in The Avengers and we have a trailer to thank them for it.
Why wouldn't we all dissect the trailer and nit pick at the footage revealed? I'd rather not, because Joss Whedon's work is always best watched in its entirety. Those who recognize the auteur need no explaining, but those who don't, Whedon is the creator of many cult shows in Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Dollhouse, Firefly (and it's feature film counterpart Serenity), Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog and so much more. He's also written the upcoming feature film The Cabin in the Woods (directed by Drew Goddard, a longtime collaborator) and a writer on Toy Story, Alien: Resurrection.
So I'm getting out of hand worshipping Whedon, here's the trailer for The Avengers
The trailer has some remarkable footage of action, humor and some very stylized directing. I think the story's strong suit is the apparent conflict within the team as well as uniting together in fighting Loki and whoever he's brought with him to rule humankind (Kree or Skrull?). Afterall, what's an alien invasion if you don't have some sparring between superhuman egos? I also believe we've just seem our first glimpse at The Hulk.
The Avengers is directed and co-written by Joss Whedon, Zak Penn also co-wrote the screenplay. Starring Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner and Tom Hiddleston. The film will be released May 4th, 2012.
