Wednesday, October 12, 2011 at 12:15PM 'Robocop' Remake Won't Use Aronofsky's Script
"Dead or alive, Aronofsky's script isn't coming with me."
Not many updates out there from Jose Padilha's Robocop remake since the Brazilian director said he wanted Michael Fassbender as his Robocop/Murphy. The studio hired writer Josh Zetumer to help develop the story, though it wasn't clear whether they'd still be working from Darren Aronofsky's script. That mystery was revealed today, as details from an interview with Padilha a few weeks ago about the film hit the web.
In case a reminder is needed, Aronofsky was attached to direct Robocop, until his passion project (Black Swan) came along, and he couldn't pass it up.
While he attended a premiere of his film Elite Squad 2 at Fantastic Fest, Padilha was asked about Aronofsky's script. Here's what he said.
"I haven't read Aronofsky's script. Aronofsky is a great director. I love his films. I am very proud because I saw Pi in the opening Sundance screening and loved it. So Aronofsky's great. I have my own take on Robocop. I know what his take was and it's totally different. It's a different thing, a different kind of film, even different period in time so I haven't read his previous work."
Padilha was understandably tight-lipped when asked about his plans for the remake, though did briefly touch on the corporate oppression overtones (also seen in the original) that will appear in the new version.
"Listen, there are the constants and the variables in this world, right? Some things change and some things never change. Corporations controlling people are a constant. It's the banks now, it's going to be something else 30 years from now. This is the way economics works. So we're not making a film about mortgage, that I can tell you."
Though the director isn't tipping his hand all that much so far, I'm still over the moon about the potential of a new Robocop with Padilha behind the wheel. I've heard nothing but great things regarding his Elite Squad films, which I regretfully haven't seen either of yet.
