'X-Men: First Class' Writers On Board for 'Top Gun' Sequel

Top Gun was one of my favorite movies as a kid, which makes it funny to see the sequel now finally being developed 100 years later.  If you have the need for speed, then you'll be glad to know Top Gun 2 is on the fast track.  Variety reported over the weekend that Paramount has hired X-Men: First Class writers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz to write the screenplay for this sequel, by title only.

First Class was a solid movie, so the decision to hire these writers is encouraging.  Or so I thought at first.  Now after learning what the producers may have in mind for Top Gun 2, it sounds stupid really.  The movie won't be a sequel or a remake, but more a complete reinvention of the famous jet fighter film.  Their brilliant plan (sarcasm) is to base the whole premise around unmanned fighters.  Really?

You wouldn't think Tony Scott would get behind an idea like that, especially considering he directed the original film.  Of course, the comments about unmanned fighters came from Scott himself earlier in the year, which makes the whole thing worse.  Not only is he behind it, it was his idea.  Ugh.

I shouldn't come down on the project too hard.  Real Steel is about boxing robots being controlled human owners, and I keep hearing great things about that movie.

So if we won't have any Mavericks or Ice Mans or Gooses (Geese) flying in Top Gun 2, what are we left with?  Tom Cruise and maybe Val Kilmer making a cameo in movie with a title they're familiar with that probably won't be very good.
