More Transformers Coming, Less Sam Witwicky
Variety reported yesterday, Transformers director Michael Bay, his chum Steven Spielberg and Hasbro were in talks trying to make a Transformers 4 happen. They're actually pushing for two more films to be made with the plan of shooting them back-to-back, Pirates of the Carribean style. Of course, the franchises' non-robotic star, Shia LaBeouf will not be returning with his Auto-Bot amigos for these future installments.
I believe LaBeouf made it clear, before Transformers Dark of the Moon was even in theaters that he wouldn't be back as Sam Witwicky. The first rumor for a LaBeouf replacement has Jason Statham possibly pegged as the new headlining star, or the next human to play second fiddle to the Transformers. I can't picture Statham in such a role at all, especially one where's not the one doing the ass kicking.
As for Bay, he at least plans to return as an exec-producer and may opt to direct. He'd like to complete a passion project of his about competitive weight lifting called Pain and Gain. No joke. I can't imagine a Transformers movie without the Bay influence: Over the top explosions and special effects, loudness coupled with more loudness.
It's being reported now that production on Transformers 4 could begin as early as a year from now, so our hiatus from robot battles won't last too long.
