It looks like John Cusack and Johnny Knoxville will be heading down to Rio de Janeiro early next year to begin filming the comedy Carnaval. According to THR, the two of them have signed on to appear in the Stone Village-produced project that will be helmed by Josh Stern.
Before you dismiss the apparent strange pairing, keep in mind that Mr. Cusack excels in off-beat buddy comedies, and Knoxville has shown some acting prowess beyond being able to withstand getting kicked in the crotch by wild horses.
Mr. Cusack is set to play a sports agent who sets off to Rio de Janeiro hoping to sign the world’s best soccer player to a contract and if he’s successful, inherits his agency and lives happily ever after. What could possibly go wrong? With a backdrop of Rio’s legendary Carnaval, wrong is in the form of Cusack’s best friend, Knoxville, who tags along. Knoxville’s character apparently sets off a crapstorm when he sleeps with the soccer star’s girlfriend.
The concept has great comedic potential and as an original idea, is a nice switch from the current indusrty-wide obession with re-making, re-treading, re-hashing, and re-tooling every marginal brand name ad-nauseum.

I'm sorry: John Cusack is not funny. He ruined Hot Tub Time Machine. That could have been a very funny stupid movie, but every time he was on screen, it was awful.

The only Cusack I like better is Joan, but in the midst of the wholesale destruction of the USA by Wall Street, I laud the appearance of dumb-buddy comedies. They are addictive and salubrious. Dumb is the Busby Berkeley of the 21st C.
I love John Cusack moives, I look forward to seeing this one.I agree I dind't like Hot Tub Time Machine, but that says more about the writing of the movie and not about him.
I thought Hot Tub Time Machine was hilarious, but agree that Cusack wasn't all that good in it. He's was kind of the straight man in that movie surrounded by funnier people like Rob Cordry and Craig Robinson.
Cusack is a mensch. It sounds like Rob Gordon from "High Fidelity" has grown up and decided to be an agent. Throw in a little Johnny Knoxville monkeyshines, what's not to love?
