Movies have always been ideal vehicles for product placement and advertising. One slumping American Auto Manufacturer, GMC (General Motor Company) is looking to take that Hollywood tradition one step further by co-financing The Canonball Run remake currently being developed by Warner Bros. The studio wants a Snatch reunion (that sounds bad) by getting director Guy Ritchie behind the wheel and Brad Pitt in the J.J. McClure role previously held by Burt Reynolds. While, GMC would love to showcase some of its new car and truck models in the film.
Ritchie and Pitt could face stiff competition from Real Steel director Shawn Levy, who's also interested in helming The Cannonball Run remake and would prefer Ben Stiller as his headliner. I'd much rather see Ritchie and Pitt any day of the week. It'll be much tougher for Warner Bros. to make a decision, especially considering how well Real Steel is doing at the box office right now.
The Canonball Run was a story about various, eccentric drivers competing in an illegal cross country-race. I've never seen it, though it does sound similar to the comedy Rat Race.
Only the original Cannonball Run producer Albert Ruddy is attached to the remake so far. GMC probably doesn't care as much about who's involved, but more likely with just how big the dividends of a blockbuster like The Cannonball Run remake could create.
