'Akira' Remake is a Go with Garrett Hedlund in Lead Role?

It was reported last weekend that Warner Bros. was going to decide this week whether to green light a new live action, English language remake of Akira, and they've come to a final decision.  Surprise!  They're going to make it and are now on the lookout for the right leading man.  According to Variety, the studio currently has its sights set on TRON: Legacy star Garrett Hedlund to fill the role of Kaneda.

The new version will take place in a futuristic Manhattan, as opposed to Tokyo, and center on the leader of a notorious biker (Hedlund?) who is on a mission to rescue his friend with psychokinetic powers from the government.   

Leo was originally slated to star, but has since backed out and will now serve as a producer on the film.  Albert Hughes (The Book of Eli) was set up as the film's director, though he also departed leaving room for Unknown director Jaume Collet-Serra to step in and takeover.  Steve Kloves, best known for his contributions to the Harry Potter films has written the script for Akira.

Leo will be joined by fellow producers Jennifer Davisson Killoran, Andrew Lazar and the director of the original animated version of Akira (1988), Katsuhiro Ohtomo.  The project is expected to go into production early next year with an estimated budget of $90 million to work with.

Hedlund showed all the necessary traits of an action star and ability to ride a motorcycles both in the present world and TRON world in TRON: Legacy.  So if Warner Bros. must remake Akira, I'm glad they're considering him to portray the main character.
