Thursday, October 20, 2011 at 10:32PM New 'Battlestar Galactica' Movie Finds Itself a Writer
Director Bryan Singer plans to bring famed sci-fi TV series Battlestar Galactica to the big screen. That we know. In fact, it's going to be his next project after he completes Jack the Giant Killer with Ewan McGregor. Now Battlestar Galactica is coming together so quickly that the studio has hired writer John Orloff to pen the script, Deadline reported earlier.
Orloff most recently wrote the script for Roland Emmerich's upcoming film Anonymous that apparently reveals whether or not Bill Shakespeare was a fraud. I guess when that movie comes out the weekend after next, we'll find out for ourselves. He also wrote a couple of episodes my favorite HBO mini-series ever, Band of Brothers. So, I'm definitely intrigued by his hiring for the Battlestar Galactica remake.
Unfortunately, from what I've read elsewhere Singer's Battlestar Galactica will resemble the late 1970's version of the show instead of the recent, and more popular series that ran from 2004-2009. If this bit of news proves to be true, my excitement for the movie has decreased considerably. The writing in the newer series was leaps and bounds better than the original, in my opinion.
Orloff admits of being a huge fan of the original series, and said he built models of the ships when he was a kid.
"I love BSG, and I would pass on the job rather than frak it up," Orloff said.
The story from the short-lived first series of Battlestar Galactica was about a ship of human refugees looking for Earth, which is still pretty similar to the premise in the newer episodes.
I'll still go see this movie in theater, but am admittedly disappointed they're opting not to use the same story line from the latter series. Here's hoping Edward James Olmos gets at least a cameo in this movie.
