Friday, October 21, 2011 at 10:03PM Ben Affleck to Direct Stephen King's 'The Stand'?

Warner Bros. has been discussing a film adaptation of Stephen King's novel "The Stand" for many months. In fact, I wrote an article here about their decision to make the film back on February 1st. At the time talk of the possible Dark Tower movie was receiving far more pub, until the development on that project was shelved indefiintely.
According to Deadline, Warner Bros. has now handed the directorial gig of The Stand adaptation to Ben Affleck to run with. No doubt, Affleck impressed us all with his work behind the camera on The Town and Gone Baby Gone, and will likely do so again with his current film Argo. But can he handle a project as epic as The Stand? We shall see.
The Stand is a classic good vs evil story. I know this because I watched the made for TV movie of The Stand (1994), which starred Gary Sinise before he made it big as Lieutenant Dan in Forrest Gump. Molly Ringwald (The Breakfast Club) and Rob Lowe (The West Wing) were the other noteworthy stars in it. It was awesome, but as I mentioned in my previous article, it was kind of corny and way ahead of its time.
Quick synopsis...It is a story of an outbreak that wipes out most of the Earth's population, leaving the survivors to split into two groups: the good guys and the bad guys. It could be a phenomenal action-drama on the big screen.
I'm psyched for this movie and can't wait to see what Affleck does with it. I just hope it doesn't go the way The Dark Tower did when we found out Ron Howard was going to direct with Javier Bardem starring, and then the movie became an afterthought as the studio backed out and Howard started working on other projects.
Pardon my French, but I hope the studio doesn't pull that shit with The Stand.

Doing The Stand on the big screen would have to be done in three or four installments to accurately portray what even the made for TV version did and at nearly eight hours long, it still missed much of Stephen King's story. It can definitely NOT be done in one movie and I hope they don't attempt to do so.
I loved the 1994 version, even though like you say, it's "corny". However, it's also deep, touching and disturbing as Stephen King intended it. I'm a fan of Ben Affleck, but I don't think he has what it takes to show the true depth of what this story means....and not with the amount of screen time they are likely to give it.
The first article i wrote about The Stand movie said they were planning on making the story into a trilogy, but this newest report didn't mention it. I couldn't agree more about Affleck directing. Maybe he'll surprise us and make a brilliant movie.
