'Captain America 2' Set Mostly in the Present

One of the things that made this summer's Captain America: The First Avenger so fun and compelling was the unique Sci-Fi tinged World War II setting, but it seems as though that's one feature the second film in the series will have to do without.  In the conversation with The HD Room, writer Stephen McFeely stated,

"I think it's safe for us to say that it's primarily set in the modern day.  That seems to have been the biggest question people have been wondering about regarding the sequel.  Most people know the story of Captain America as the story of this man out of time, and because The Avengers is such a big movie, and because [Avengers director] Joss Whedon has so many moving pieces, we've been left with room to explore Cap entering the modern day wondering, "What is all this? What's happened to the world" and so on."

It's a disappointing thing to hear, although I'm not really sure how they could avoid it.  Captain America tied the titular heroes' WWII involvement so closely with the Red Skull and Hydra that any attempt to shoehorn a separate narrative in between it would just feel contrived.  What else he said did sound promising, as it was Steve Rogers sense of idealism that makes him so unique among today's superheroes.  It shows how he clashes with the modern day gloom-and-doom attitude towards government sounds like an interesting thing to explore.

Captain America 2 is tentatively set for a 2014 release date.
