Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at 2:41PM Warner Bros. To Stop Selling 'Harry Potter' DVDs

It may sound almost as unbelievable as the existence of magic itself, but according to Warner Bros., the plan is to remove all Harry Potter DVDs from store shelves by the end of the year. This is only a month or so after the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 is given a DVD launch on Nov. 11. The move is probably just a way of building up anticipation for some kind of massive box set release. Even from that perspective it can't help but get a huge "What the hell?" reaction from me.
Whatever kind of collection they probably plan on selling is exactly the kind of souped up, expensive, features-laden collection that die hard fans of the series would likely buy anyways. On the other hand, the kind of person who just wants to watch the movie is going to want a cheap bare bones release, so it isn't like they're going shell out a bunch of money for a special edition or a collection. I don't really see how this is going to do anything but lose Warner Bros. money. But hey, maybe some hyperconservative religious group managed to infiltrate the company, and this is just their way of stopping the the soul-destroying demonspawn that is the Harry Potter franchise. That's plausible, right?

I thought they were replacing the DVDs with Blu-Rays.
It means all those Harry Potter DVDs in the bargain bins at Wal Mart will disappear. You might find them at Big Lots for 3 dollars in a few years. That's where moratorium dvds go when they die.
