The trailer for the most recent adaptation of the Dr. Seuss novel, The Lorax, was released earlier today. It's being brought to us from Illumination Entertainment, the same studio that made Despicable Me, and looks to be following a similar style to the commercially and critically successful 2008's adaptation of Horton Hears a Who. The film's released plot summary states that it is about, "Ted, an idealistic young boy, who tries to find the one thing that will win him affection of the girl of his dreams. To do so, he must discover the story of the Lorax, the grumpy yet charming creature who fights to protect his world."
The original classic is actually my favorite of Dr. Seuss' books , and this trailer has me mostly pretty optimistic. The plot looks to have been shifted and expanded somewhat, but in a way that makes sense in order to make for a more detailed narrative and maintains the core of the story. I'm not too happy that they just decided to turn the Once-ler (played by Ed Helms) into a regular human. You never saw his full body in the book (just his arms and eyes) and to portray him like that kills alot of the mystery in his character. That, and the film doesn't seem to be getting across the bleakness that the book did so well. Danny Devito looks (or sounds, rather) to make for a perfect Lorax though, and the visuals look steller. Definitely something to be hopeful for.
