In Time
Starring Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried, Cillian Murphy
Directed by Andrew Niccol
Rated PG-13

In Time is a movie where minutes become your currency to survive. When your clock times out, so does the beating of your heart. You pay for coffee, transportation, and sex with time. The irony of the movie is In Time wasted 109 minutes of mine. If I was living in this sci-fi adventure, a 109 minutes is not something you just waste on an average flick starring a former pop super star. In reality it could be the life and death of my mother, girlfriend, or best friend.
Andrew Niccol’s premise however is unique, and current. He captures the idea that those only left with a day of time have no other choice, but to live just for today. He creates a clever storyline that allow the characters in the movie to share, gamble, steal or save another human beings time. All characters stop aging at the age of 25, and from there time equals survival. However the execution of his direction in my personal opinion misses the mark. There are a lot of loose ends, questions that go unanswered, and mediocre acting that encompasses the film.
Will Salas played by Justin Timberlake is granted an inconceivable amount of time by Matt Boomer played by Henry Hamilton within the first 20 minutes of the movie. Boomer who has an inconceivable amount of time is saved from thieves by Salas, and his unparalleled running ability. Salas promises Boomer if he ever had that amount of time he wouldn’t waste a second of it. What the audience soon realizes is the currency of time is a double edge sword.
Those who have it are never really living, and those that don’t can rarely have peace of mind. The best part of Will Salas in the movie is when he takes his shirt off; otherwise his character was a bit of a let down. I actually am a fan of Timberlake’s acting ability. I thoroughly enjoyed him in Alpha Dogs and The Social Network, and not because he was shitless. However in this movie his character had little to no emotion. He is very stoic, and when he does show emotion it is short lived.

Without staying too off course, Mr. Salas does receive a century of time from Mr. Boomer, and heads to a wealthier time zone. Unfortunately the time keeper, Raymond Leon, played by Cillian Murphy is already aware of a transfer of what appears to be unauthorized time. Upon Salas's arival in the wealthiest time zone his presence is immediately noticed by Sylvia Weis played by Amanda Seyfried. A trust fund baby since birth Sylvia is sick of living a life of no adventure. So like any rational girl she betrays her father, falls in love with a felon and begins to partake in criminal activity to define herself.
Salas and Weis soon become bank robbers for the people, donating stolen time to the poorest ghettos. The movie leaves out some key questions. For starters, what year is this? When did this way of life start? Why do you stop aging at 25? Who installed the clocks in everyone’s skin? Although there are definitely chunks of this movie that I did not include within this review, it is my opinion that they just got lost in time. So it is up to you whether to spend your hard earned money on this movie.

Sadly, the premise (which most people agree is the best part of the movie) isn't unique, but apparently stolen from Lee Falk's short story "Time is Money", from Playboy, Dec. 1975.
