Saturday, October 29, 2011 at 4:20PM James Mangold Discusses Plans for 'The Wolverine'

2009's X-men Origins: Wolverine scored high at the box office, but left a very bad taste in the mouths of both critics and fans. It gave us exactly what we expected to see, and nothing else. It's a good thing that 3:10 to Yuma director James Mangold seems intent on taking the X-men franchise places it hasn't gone before in The Wolverine. In an interview with The Playlist, Mangold said,
"It's a kind of adventure following such a unique character also in a really unique environment. I mean, the fact that half of the characters in this movie speak Japanese, this is like a foreign language superhero movie that's as much a drama and a detective film story and a film noir, with high-octane action as it is anything like a tentpole film."
He goes on to describe the film exploring what it is like for the character to be immortal, and how this effects his relationships with others.
Overall, what he says make me pretty excited to see what he turns up with. I was super disappointed when Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky left the project, but Mangold's intentions certainly seem like they're in the right place. He seems to really know how to make the character interesting, something the Origins fell flat on its face at doing. X-men: First Class proved that the franchise could work in a retro 60's setting, I think that it could easily work in a Japanese one as well.
