Johnny Depp played the writer of Peter Pan in Finding Neverland, and he may fill the role of another famous author very soon. THR reports that Depp will team with Universal to produce a biopic about Dr. Seuss, leaving open the possibility he'll star as well. Everyone I know was raised on the classic children's stories of Dr. Seuss from "One Fish, Two Fish" to "Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You?".
We've seen so many of Dr. Seuss works become film adaptations (How the Grinch Stole Christmas, The Cat in the Hat) that a biopic never seemed far behind.
The rhyming author lived to be 87 years old, and published 46 children's books during that time. He never had children of his own, but instead had a famous saying, "You have 'em; I'll entertain 'em."
The screenplay will be handled by Keith Bunin, whose writing experince comes from five episodes of HBO's series In Treatment. Who writes this script isn't nearly as vital as who stars in it, in my opinion. Depp should headline this film, so the studio can truly maximize the project's massive commercial potential. Locking down Depp now could result in landing a top notch director as well.
