Tarsem Singh brilliantly executes a story of good vs. evil in the compelling 110 minute 3D flick Immortals. The film depicts a story of a peasant chosen by the gods to lead a epic fight against the darkest pits of evil. The outcome of this epic battle will determine the survival of all of mankind. The fight for evil is lead by the wrath of King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke), and his blood thirsty army. King Hyperion enters each town like a destructive tsunami. We witness his venomous nature and ability to torture his pray. King Hyperion wants one thing and one thing only; that is the legendary Epirus Bow, a weapon of unimaginable power forged in the heavens. With the Bow, the king will be able to overthrow the Gods and become master of the world.
In Tarsem Singh latest film, the director sets the viewer up to experience a gut-wrenching world of good, evil, and the heavens above. The movie begins with the introduction of a peasant named Theseus (Henry Cavill). A strong, yet noble man whose mother has been outcasted ever since being raped by a pack of traveling villagers. Theseus, secretly chosen by Zeus, must save his people from Hyperion and his hordes. Theseus after witnessing the beheading of his mother, and turned into a slave is ready to give up on life within 30 minutes of the movie.
His lifeline, and savior is Phaedra played by Freida Pinto. Phaedra also captured by the king is able to save Theseus through her love, and visions. The movie transitions from three perspectives. We witness the perspective of Zeus, Theseus, and King Hyperion. What I love about the gods of this movie is they are more human like than god like. They bleed, cry and struggle with knowing what's right. We see Zeus, played by Luke Evans have to kill his own blood in order to stand by his word. We witness Poseidon played by Kellan Lutz shirtless. Need I say more. The gods of this movie add just enough of a twist to separate itself from what we have already seen.
Over all I really enjoyed the movie. It kept my attention, and had very memorable scenes from love making to the finale battle. It also left the ability for this movie to become a sequel. I enjoyed it more than 300 which a lot of people are comparing it to. Between the sets, the costumes, the acting I give this movie Four Abiding dudes.
