Friday, November 11, 2011 at 10:50PM Spike Lee wants Colin Firth as Villain in 'Oldboy' Adaptation
After failing to break through development hell when it was slated to be directed by Steven Spielberg and star Will Smith, it seems as though an American remake of the Korean revenge flick Oldboy is coming along nicely. So far, Spike Lee is set to direct with Josh Brolin in the starring role, and we might just get to see him swearing revenge against last year's Best Actor Oscar winner Colin Firth, according to Twitch. It would certainly be an interesting move for Firth, who has always been known for playing sincere, likable characters. Of course, if you're familiar with the story, that isn't such a bad thing to bring to the part.
Oldboy is the story of a man (Brolin) kidnapped out of nowhere and trapped in a solitary room for fifteen years, only to be released just as suddenly. After gaining the friendship of a local young woman (not yet cast, though it's a safe bet that it won't be Megan Fox), he learns that his kidnappers were hired by the mysterious Adrian. Why? Well, that would spoil far too much.
While it doesn't seem particularly necessary, I must admit I'm pretty excited to see how this version turns out. The talent behind it so far is top notch, especially if Firth decides to take the roll. I'd love to see how he handles playing a villain. I'm also very curious to see how much of the more controversial aspects of the original make it over into the remake. I'll take a wild guess and say that the "eating a live squid" scene won't be in it.
