Director David Yates isn't looking to take a break now that the Harry Potter franchise has closed the books forever. He'll look to bring another iconic British character to the big screen, as Variety reports Yates will align himself with BBC to develop a Doctor Who movie based on the long time sci-fi TV series. The first Doctor Who TV series began airing in 1963.
Fans of the show shouldn't expect to see current Doctor Who stars David Tennant or Matt Smith make the feature film jump though.
Yates told Variety that the show "Needs quite a radical transformation to take into the bigger arena," and they won't be adapting from the current series, but starting over "from scratch". Yates also mentioned that he and the BBC were now looking for writers, and "we're going to spend two to three years to get it right."
Doctor Who has been one of the longest running TV shows in history and has seen as many as 11 different actors play the Time Lord. The story of an alien time traveler and his companions is obviously a great fit for a major motion picture, and has been for some time.
"The notion of the time-travelling Time Lord is such a strong one, because you can express story and drama in any dimension or time," Yates said.
Yates and the BBC seem heavily invested in this project, so rest assured it will be at least a tent pole movie, I would think. My question is who will they bring onboard to play the Doctor?
