It seemed only a few days ago that GTBP reported on a finally announced release date for The Iron Lady, starring Meryl Streep. Now comes news of a new artwork and a full length trailer for the film on former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
This is the second time that Meryl Streep and director Phyllida Lloyd have worked together since Mamma Mia! in 2008. Lloyd has some very complimentary words for the work Meryl Streep has put into for her transformation in Margaret Thatcher:
"I think Margaret Thatcher was a superstar in this country and I think we all felt we needed a superstar to play her... Somebody of huge intelligence, passion and power and warmth."
During an early British screening of the film, there was some very unflattering remarks about Streep's portrayal. Lloyd defended her saying "When they see Meryl's performance they will understand how much care and attention to Lady Thatcher's dignity she's given it."
THE IRON LADY is a surprising and intimate portrait of Margaret Thatcher, the first and only female Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. One of the 20th century’s most famous and influential women, she came from nowhere to smash through barriers of gender and class to be heard in a male dominated world.
This is a film about power and the price that is paid for power, a story that is both unique and universal.
The Iron Lady is directed by Phyllida Lloyd and written by Abi Morgan. Starring Meryl Streep, Jim Broadbent and Richard E. Grant. The film opens in the U.S. on December 30.
