After the mediocre cash grab that was Cars 2, Pixar really needs to go the extra mile with their next project and prove they haven't gone the way of late 90's Disney. And from the looks of it, Brave might fulfill that roll. It takes place in the 10th century Scottish Highlands and tells the story of a rebellious princess who turns to a witch to help her throw off her societal chains. Things go wrong, and she must race to fix things before it's too late.
Overall, I'm pretty excited for it. The story is a bit cliche (warrior princess goes against sexist culture, etc. etc.), but at least it looks like a well-executed cliche. The character models look more life-like then they ever have before, and I love how well-animated the little details like Meredith's hair and the horse's galloping are. It's great to see that Pixar is making what looks to be a bit more adult-oriented then their usual fair, and the setting is something that I can't wait to see more of. Although, that last part might just be the result of a current Skyrim obsession.
Brave is directed by animator Mark Andrews (who, ironically, replaced Brenda Chapman in what would have been the first Pixar directorial role for a female), and is scheduled for release on June 22, 2012.
