In an earlier post, we mentioned that Immortals director Tarsem Singh was directing a re-imagining of the classic Snow White story titled Mirror, Mirror. Now we've got a trailer for it. Something I'd like to stress is that even though it deals with the same broad subject matter as Snow White and the Huntsmen (which also had a recently released trailer), it is clearly going for a different atmosphere and the two should not be strongly compared. Especially when its looks so terrible on its own merits.
Julia Roberts does not work as an evil queen. Even as the wannabe Shrek-villain sassy evil queen, she just doesn't sell the malevolence. There's a reason she almost always plays the protagonist of the movie. Furthermore, isn't her entire appeal her all-American looks? Does it make any sense at all for her to play the whole "beautiful, but wicked" archetype?
Even outside of her, though, the trailer just doesn't click. The visuals look fake, like a cheap stage play. The humor feels like it was taken out of a bad Disney movie. The"warrior princess" angle is tired and it ends with a Scarface joke. A freaking Scarface joke. It's good to see that it's doing something different than Huntsman, but I don't see it going anywhere but down.
