If you're a superhero fan, you don't need me to tell you why the upcoming Avengers movie is such a big deal. We got four big-budget superhero movies, all with an interconnected continuity, and now we get to see a crossover between all of them directed by the guy who was responsible for Firefly. Of course, he also wrote Alien: Resurrection, so we don't have 100% certainty it'll work. But if Yahoo! Movies' recent interview with Joss Whedon is anything to go by, we shouldn't be worried.
The interview is pretty widespread, but I'll post some of the highlights. Whedon talks ad-libbing with Robert Downey Jr.:
"I would give him stuff to say, and by and large, he would say it...But then there were always pockets where we had some wiggle room for him to play, or ask for options, and if he said, ‘Can we do something else here?’ I could give him four or five options by the time he had his makeup on. Because that’s actually fun for me, that frantic scramble...we would try different things."
And on reimagining the Hulk with Mark Ruffalo:
"And both of us agreed upfront that the template for who we wanted this guy to be in his life was Bill Bixby, the TV [show character] who was busy helping other people. That was more interesting to us than the Banner in the first two movies who was always fixated on curing himself. We spent a lot of time talking about what makes us Hulk out, the nature of anger, how it feels."
And on turning Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury into a deeper character:
"I was very pleased that Marvel actually mandated — they were very interested in keeping him, not just in the sort of a mystery of how the organization operates, but a real moral gray area where you really have to decide, ‘Is Nick Fury the most manipulative guy in the world? Is he a good guy? Is he completely Machiavellian or is it a bit of both?’ And that was really fun to tweak."

Whedon is clearly approaching the project with how to tell a story at the forefront of his mind, and that is what can make a truly great film. I still might be looking forward to The Dark Knight Rises more, but at this point it's only by a hair.
