Rachel Weisz (The Constant Gardener) has signed on to join fellow Oscar winner Colin Firth (The King’s Speech) in Jonathan Teplitzky’s adaptation of Eric Lomax’s World War II biography, The Railway Man. Lomax’s story focuses on two distinct periods of his life. The first part relates the torture the young Scotsman suffered as a Japanese prisoner-of-war aboard Burma’s infamous “Death Railway” and then his post-war struggles to find inner peace and forgiveness.
Jeremy Irvine (War Horse) has been cast in the role of the Scotsman and Firth will portray Lomax in his post-war years.
Weisz will play Lomax’s wife, Patti Wallace, who helps him heal from the physical and emotional cruelty he suffered at the hands of his captors. In a desperate attempt to help him overcome his suffering she reaches out to the same men responsible for abusing him during the war.
Filming begins on the $20 million dollar picture next February in Australia, Thailand, and the U.K. Although a release date of 2013 has been announced, that date is subject to change if the gut-wrenching drama and stellar cast looks like Oscar material, then Lionsgate could push it into next year’s Oscar race.
Andy Patersen who shares script-writing credit with Frank Cottrell Boyce is also co-producing with Chris Brown.
