Pixar's live-action John Carter film isn't hitting theaters for another four months, but some newly released photos do offer some fascinating tidbits for expectant fans to gossip over for awhile. Written and directed by Academy Award winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo), John Carter stars Taylor Kitsch (Friday Night Lights) and Lynn Collins (X-Men Origins: Wolverine).
A strong supporting cast includes; Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Thomas Hayden Church (Easy A), Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man), Mark Strong (Sherlock Holmes), and Ciaran Hinds (There Will be Blood).
In an interview with EW, Stanton describes the creature above:
“They’re sort of an oversized gorilla in the books, and they’re kind of ubiquitous. They’re littered everywhere through at least the first several novels. They were always cool, just from a visceral standpoint, [but] they don’t really have a narrative function in the first book,” said Stanton about the White Ape. “So what we did is we made the White Apes a formidable creature that you kind of hear about throughout the movie, but you never really witness. There’s a subtle sense of anticipation for what these things might be like.”
Back in July, GTBP’s Jonathan Silva was less than enthusiastic for the Pixar non-animated film effort and after viewing the trailer I agreed with him. It is a gamble for Disney to let its Pixar brand to develop non-animated features and a lot is riding on this particular effort. If it hits big, then Disney has another flagpole franchise. If it bombs, then it’s back to the drawing room....literally.
John Carter is based on a series of novels written by the late Edgar Rice Burroughs. Burroughs, in case you were wondering, was also the genius behind the creation of Tarzan.
