Tuesday, November 29, 2011 at 2:15PM Spike Lee's 'Oldboy' to Somehow Have "Darker" Ending

Fans of the original Korean revenge film are probably just as perplexed as I am at that statement, as it's hard to imagine being possible. But, according to producer Roy Lee, that's what we might have to look forward to. In addition to confirmation that Colin Firth is going to play the villain (as we previously reported the possibility of), we got some other details about how Spike Lee's version of Oldboy will differ from the original.
"We are planning to shoot 'Old Boy' in March and [we] should start pre-production in late January," he said, according to Worst Previews. "This is a brand new script by Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend). It is very similar to the [original] film, but Protosevich has added new elements that will throw off the audience who have seen the original movie, because there are new characters and new situations that present themselves in a way that change the story but eventually go in the same direction. The ending will be something audiences - especially fans of the original movie- will be very happy with. Some may consider it a bit darker."
As much as I love the original, there are certain elements that wouldn't work well in an American setting, and it's good to see that Spike Lee is willing to make this movie his own and not just take a copy and paste approach. At the same time, the "darker" comment comes off as being really surreal. I certainly hope that they aren't changing the ending's basic twist, as that would just fundamentally change what made the original so daring and unique. With Spike Lee, though, I think I'll lean on the side of optimism.

I really hope he doesn't mess this up. The original (ugh, it's strange calling it "original") Oldboy still goes down as quite possibly the most disturbing movie I've ever seen.

The writer from I am Legend?! That's definitely not a good sign. Talk about completely ruining the ending of a movie. The title itself tells who how it was supposed to end. Will Smith is supposed to become a legend, the current (in the movie) day Dracula... but no, his ending turns him into a hero and has modern-day-man survive instead. Lame and not very 'dark'.

Oh, okay. So the octopus will eat the main character raw. THAT'LL be darker.
