This summer's Rise of the Planet of the Apes was the best sci-fi film to come out in a long time, probably since 2009's District 9. This was due, in no small part, to a magnificent performance from Andy Serkis, known also for his motion-capture rolls as Gollum and King Kong. Now, as Fox preps for a sequel (a sequel which, for a change, emerges naturally from the plot of the first), they've reported that Serkis has been signed in to play the same role. This isn't particularly surprising.
What is a bit more surprising, however, is that Fox has announced its plans to campaign for an Oscar nomination for the motion-capture star. Fans may recall that Serkis was previously given a snub for his role as Gollum, as the academy required that actors at one point be physically on screen, rather than being rotoscoped.
I'm not entirely sure if they still enforce that rule, but in today's cgi-heavy world of filmmaking, it seems both outdated and blatantly unfair. Charlize Theron won an Oscar in 2003 for her performance in Monster, one that was heavily aided by the piles of makeup that were put on just so they could make her look ugly. Is that really that much different than using motion-capture cgi? If the restriction is still there, then hopefully Serkis' performance will be able to garner enough support to end it.
